Women in Construction Week: ‘There is so much opportunity’

Home » Newsroom » Women in Construction Week: ‘There is so much opportunity’
At Schauer Group, we are proud to partner with many women leaders in the construction industry. In honor of Women in Construction Week, we asked a few of them to share their insights about the industry and advice for other women who are interested in similar careers.

Here’s what they had to say:

Mary Fantozzi (Williamson), president, J.D. Williamson Construction Co., Inc.

Why should girls consider a career in construction?

Girls should consider a career in construction because it is such a fun, exciting industry to work in. There are many ways to get involved in a project, whether it is helping pour concrete, digging a footer, forming a bridge deck or making sure the project stays on schedule and budget. There are many different types of people needed to make a project successful! Every project is unique, and the feeling you have when a project is complete gives you a sense of pride that continues every time you see it.

What made you decide to go into the industry?

My parents started our business over 50 years ago, and I had a role from a young age when I was delivering parts to jobsites, cleaning machines and going to equipment auctions with my dad. When my parents were thinking about succession planning for the business, I knew I needed to be a part of it so that I could continue what they had started. Construction is always needed, and there is so much opportunity.

What’s your advice to women following in your path?

Be tough and don’t let others intimidate you. Women are underrepresented in our field but that doesn’t mean we don’t belong here, and we have some pretty darn good ideas that deserve to be heard! Follow your heart and hands.

Jennifer Katich, human resource manager, The Vasco Group

Why should girls consider a career in construction?

The construction industry offers a sense of pride and accomplishment. Being part of a team that works together to complete beautiful projects is what makes working in construction enjoyable.  No matter what role you have in a construction company, you have an impact on the project being built. Construction is a great industry for those that are creative, have problem solving ability, and love a challenge.

What’s your favorite part of your role?

The team at Vasco is the best part of my role.  They have become my family and it’s awesome to be part of a such a great organization.

What’s your advice to women following in your path?

The best advice that I can give women following in my path is if anyone tells you that you can’t do something, prove them wrong, and keep proving them wrong.  Work hard, never stop learning, have integrity in everything that you do, confidence in yourself and your abilities, and most importantly, own it!

Betsy Sterling, president, Beaver Excavating Company

When did you know this was the right industry for you?

Once I was working in the industry, within the first year I knew this was where I wanted to be. There are really good people in our industry, and they are always trying to make things better. Whether it’s improving a road or building new access, they are trying to make improvements wherever they are. It’s really nice to be part of a team that has the same direction. Everyone has a common goal, and you leave a place better than when you got there.

What’s your favorite part of your role?

My favorite part of the role is the people – getting to meet the people we partner with and the different communities we impact. Watching other generations make this career choice is very humbling, and at the end of the day, it is the best part of my job. Our family company is providing for so many families, and it’s a good career. It is a very lucrative career, and it’s making so many other lives better.

What’s your advice to women following in your path?

Ultimately, follow your heart and don’t ever compromise your dream because of your gender.
